An ankle bone spur, medically known as an osteophyte, is an extra growth of bone that forms along the edges of the ankle joint. Bone spurs are typically the body's response to chronic stress, joint degeneration, instability, or repetitive microtrauma. Although the spur itself may not always be painful, it can irritate surrounding soft tissues, limit joint movement, and cause inflammation.
Bone spurs commonly develop in the front (anterior ankle impingement) or back (posterior ankle impingement) of the ankle joint. Athletes involved in running, football, dance, or jumping sports are particularly prone to developing ankle spurs due to repetitive ankle movements and stress.
Over time, repeated ankle sprains, osteoarthritis, or chronic instability can lead to abnormal bone formation. As the spur enlarges, it may restrict ankle motion, especially during activities that require bending the ankle upward or downward.
If left untreated, ankle bone spurs can lead to chronic pain, reduced mobility, altered walking patterns, and decreased participation in sports and daily activities.
At Magnum Physiotherapy, our treatment approach focuses on reducing pain, improving ankle mobility, correcting biomechanical abnormalities, and preventing further joint degeneration through evidence-based rehabilitation and advanced physiotherapy technologies.
Develops at the front of the ankle and often causes pain during dorsiflexion (lifting the foot upward).
Develops at the back of the ankle and may cause pain when pointing the toes downward.
At Magnum Physiotherapy, a comprehensive assessment is performed to identify the source of symptoms and contributing factors.
The evaluation may include:
