Fecal Incontinence

Fecal Incontinence, also known as bowel incontinence or accidental bowel leakage, is a condition in which an individual loses the ability to control bowel movements. The severity may range from occasional leakage of gas or stool to complete loss of bowel control.

Normal bowel continence depends on the proper function of several structures, including:

  • Pelvic floor muscles
  • Anal sphincter muscles
  • Rectum and bowel
  • Nerves controlling bowel function
  • Cognitive awareness and mobility

When one or more of these systems become impaired, bowel control can be affected. Fecal Incontinence may occur due to muscle weakness, nerve damage, childbirth injuries, surgery, aging, chronic constipation, diarrhea, or neurological disorders.

The condition affects both men and women, although it is more common in older adults and women following childbirth-related injuries. Many individuals hesitate to seek treatment due to embarrassment; however, effective treatment options, including physiotherapy, are available and can significantly improve symptoms.

At Magnum Physiotherapy, we provide confidential, compassionate, and evidence-based care focused on restoring bowel control, improving pelvic floor function, and enhancing quality of life.
