Pes Anserine Bursitis is an inflammatory condition involving the pes anserine bursa, a small fluid-filled sac located on the inner (medial) side of the knee, approximately 2–3 inches below the joint line. The bursa acts as a cushion, reducing friction between the tendons and the underlying bone.
The term "pes anserinus" means "goose's foot" in Latin, referring to the combined insertion of three muscles:
When excessive friction, overuse, poor biomechanics, or repetitive stress irritates this area, the bursa becomes inflamed, leading to pain and tenderness on the inside of the knee.
Pes Anserine Bursitis commonly affects runners, athletes, overweight individuals, and people with osteoarthritis of the knee. It may also occur due to muscle tightness, improper training techniques, weak hip muscles, or abnormal lower limb alignment.
If left untreated, symptoms may persist and interfere with walking, sports participation, and daily activities. Early physiotherapy intervention can effectively reduce pain, address the underlying causes, and prevent recurrence.
